Teaching Videos

This section includes some teaching videos that help to convey my beginning path into becoming where I am today as a teacher. Performance videos can be found under the “Videos” tab of this website.

Basic Strategies to Teaching a Drumline (2)

This is a continuation of the first video, which gives you an idea of how I go about teaching students in a Battery setting. This part specifically covers 3's, or "hugs", as well as one of the approaches I use when teaching a battery excerpt in a piece of music.. However, this is simply an example; one of my teaching philosophies is that there is often no real formula to teach students, but rather you must teach to the personality of the student, or in this case the personality of the Battery.

Beginning Band

This video contains a lesson I wrote for a heterogenous beginner class involving rhythm. The lesson involves the introduction of dotted rhythms.

8th Grade Percussion Lesson

This is a 20 minute video where I am teaching 3 older middle school percussionists. I had never met with them before, so I decided to write up a lesson plan that retouches on the basics.

Capstone Project

This video contains some of the earlier experiences that I had when first teaching beginner percussionists. Some subtitles are included to help indicate some of the things I learned to do and not to do when teaching this particular class.
